Nonprofit leadership training and coaching

Nonprofit leaders carry more, with less support

Executive Director coaching, board and staff leadership training, and nonprofit management development, built with the same rigor used in corporate leadership programs.

I would love to see how i can help if:
  • — You're an Executive Director doing the job of three people with the support structure of none

  • — Your board and staff have never gone through leadership development together

  • — A founder or long-tenured ED transition is somewhere on the horizon, planned or not

  • — Program managers are being asked to lead teams with zero formal leadership training

Leadership development experience across sectors, including:

The same caliber of leadership work used inside organizations like these gets brought directly to mission-driven teams, not a scaled-down version of it.

The nonprofit leadership gap, and why it persists

Corporations invest heavily in leadership development because they've learned it protects revenue. Nonprofits are asked to run with the same operational complexity, staff, budget, board governance, mission delivery, funder relationships, volunteers, often with a fraction of the resources and none of the training pipeline.

Leadership development is usually the first line item cut when a nonprofit budget tightens, even though it's frequently the thing keeping an organization from losing its next Executive Director to burnout.

Worth knowing

A nonprofit Executive Director's role routinely combines what would be four or five separate roles at a comparable-sized company: CEO, head of fundraising, HR, and board liaison, often with a much smaller team absorbing the rest. Leadership training built for a single-function corporate manager rarely translates cleanly to that reality, which is exactly the gap a nonprofit-specific engagement is built to close.

What nonprofit leaders are actually navigating

The pressures a generic leadership course was never built to address

Board relationships that double as reporting lines

Managing up to a volunteer board is a different skill than managing up to a single boss, and almost nobody gets trained on it directly.

Funder and donor pressure shaping every decision

Leadership decisions in a nonprofit rarely happen in a vacuum, funding realities are always part of the calculation.

Leading a mix of paid staff and volunteers

Two different motivation structures, two different accountability levels, one team that still has to function as one team.

Succession risk nobody has a plan for

Founder-led and long-tenured-ED organizations are often one departure away from a leadership crisis, with no development pipeline underneath them.

Hi, I'm Bethany Peters — mission-driven organizations deserve leadership development built to the same standard as anyone else's.

With over 20 years spanning higher education, organizational leadership, coaching, and team development, I've worked across both corporate and mission-driven organizations, which means I know exactly where the standard leadership playbook stops applying to a nonprofit's reality, and where it still holds.

I hold a Ph.D. and am a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) through the International Coaching Federation, certified in CliftonStrengths, Working Genius, the Enneagram, EQi 2.0, and MBTI, tools I bring into nonprofit engagements the same way I do corporate ones, without diluting the approach because the budget is smaller.
